Winter Conference 2010: The Heart of Racial
Justice
Students. Scripture. Experience. These threads and more came
together the weekend of February 19-21 to create
a powerfully transforming weekend for the 22
students in the “Heart of Racial Justice” track
at our divisional InterVarsity Winter
Conference. While most of our FIFUL programs
bring students into the heart of the city, three
of our team journeyed to Bakersfield to teach
and train students in the context of this annual
discipleship conference.

Ministry
Reflections
"The American
Dream" by Lacy Chastain
All throughout my elementary school experience
the concept of “The American Dream” was drilled
into you. “Your forefathers came to the U.S. to
make a better life for themselves.” “All it
takes is hard work and you can do anything.”
“Look at the Rockefellers, they started with
nothing and they made it in life.” “Everyone has
that chance you just have to work hard enough.”
As a generation we were brought up to
look at poverty like it was solely the
impoverisher’s fault. They did not work hard
enough or care enough about their lives to make
their “American Dream” come true. I am not sure
the school structure intended that thinking to
evolve out of their teachings but it happened.
