Wise Old Owl Program

But Jesus said, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 19:14.

The Lowell neighborhood is comprised of a number of cultures including Latino, Hmong, Lao, African-American, and Caucasian. Many of the children that attend Lowell Elementary school speak two or three languages, some are just learning English. The teachers do what they can to help the children, but they can only give so much attention to each individual child.

Our Wise Old Owl Program was created to offer children (K-6th grade) an opportunity to work with an adult one-on-one in math skills, reading development, or just building a relationship. Tutors are able to share the love of Christ while reading with a child or helping with homework. Volunteers are mostly from Fresno State University, Fresno City College
, and Fresno Pacific University, but high school students and retired persons are encouraged to participate as well.

We have a home-based tutoring center, complete with computers and internet access.

Wednesdays at 473 N. Calaveras, and Thursdays at 336 N. San Pablo.

Up to 30 tutors serve 30-50 kids weekly, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5pm. The Fall Program runs from September to November.  The Spring Program runs from February to April.

FALL 2009 tutor training begins Wednesday, September 2nd and Thursday, September 3rd at 3:15 p.m.  The children begin coming the following week.
